One of the ways to promote #foodsecurity in Africa is by empowering youths and women through different anchor borrower programs which should be adequately monitored and coordinated.

2023 has been another highly productive year for the Seafood Grimsby & Humber Alliance (SGHA), its board, and stakeholders.   Simon Smith, Chair of the board for SGHA reports: 'Our key successes are aligned with our strategic priorities for the seafood cluster namely, skills, decarbonisation, and trade competitiveness. It’s clear that the strategic headway of SGHA, whether is delivering on its key priorities, influencing policy, or shaping the developing innovation for the sector, is having an impact nationally and abroad. IN THE MEDIA: Our recent Rwanda Cohort 2 graduation featured in this story by Umuseke that highlights the important position our Fellows hold in crafting solutions to existing and emerging food system challenges locally. In particular, the piece spotlights the work of our Fellows Richard Makuza and Lise Janviere AMIZERO IGIHOZO who are working with communities to address issues such as climate change effects, child malnutrition, and yield gaps to boost incomes and livelihoods of rural smallholder farmers. One of the most interesting sessions I attended at the recently concluded International Association Food Protection (IAFP) conference in Canada was titled ‘The Significance of Diversity in Developing Large Integrated Food Safety Initiatives and Projects.’ This session emphasized the importance of embracing diversity within research teams. I had the privilege of sharing a compelling diversity success story from South Africa during the event. I highlighted the remarkable approach taken by the National Research Foundation (NRF) in South Africa. The NRF not only prioritizes excellence but also places a strong emphasis on diversity when awarding research grants to scientists. Thanks to this inclusive approach, I have had the privilege of attending numerous IAFP conferences, as they were sponsored through NRF funding. It is a clear testament to how promoting diversity can lead to fruitful opportunities and collaborations in the scientific community. I firmly believe that every leader, regardless of their domain—be it business, government, or any other sector—should actively prioritize and support diversity within their teams. Diverse perspectives and experiences can lead to innovative solutions, enhanced creativity, and overall improved performance.
