Happy Friday! Here are five things that should be on your radar:

  1. Republic Services, a leader in the environmental services industry, plans to relocate its corporate headquarters in Phoenix. The new 240,000-square-foot headquarters building will house 1,000 employees, and create an additional 600 jobs over time
  2. Highlight Tech Co., a Taiwan-based semiconductor supplier, announced plans to open its North American headquarters in Phoenix. The company expects to be fully operational by the end of 2023 and create up to 60 jobs by 2024.  
  3. XNRGY, a Canadian manufacturer of custom HVAC systems, secured construction financing for the first phase of its $300 million U.S. headquarters in Mesa. The first phase is expected to be complete in 2024, and the facility will create over 1,200 jobs once fully complete
  4. Scottsdale-based behavioral health firm, EvolvedMD, has secured $14 million in a new funding round. The company plans to use the funding to expand its workforce and delivery footprint in the Southwest
  5. Televerde, a Phoenix-based sales and marketing firm, has relocated its headquarters to a new, larger office in Phoenix. The over 11,000-square-foot office features a design tailored for hybrid work, private offices, collaborative spaces, and a conference center.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research

The Department of Defense is accepting applications for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) research.

There are two opportunities available:

  1. Idea Development Award - This award seeks to promote new ideas that are still in the early stages of development and have the potential to yield impactful data and new avenues of investigation. It supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress in improving outcomes for individuals with DMD. Applications must address opportunities and challenges in the development of safe and effective macromolecular and cellular therapies that focus on primary pathology of DMD. Eight awards are expected. The total funding pool is $4.48 million.
  2. Translational Research Award - This award supports advanced translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in DMD research into clinical applications. Two awards are expected. The total funding pool is $4.16 million. Applications must address one of the following focus areas:
    • Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling or clinical studies designed to improve care and quality of life
    • Assessment of clinical trial tools and outcome measures with a focus on understudied systems

Economic Valuation of Freshwater Lakes and Reservoirs Experiencing Harmful Algal Blooms

The Engineer Research and Development Center seeks to assess the economic impacts of harmful algal blooms (HABs) on freshwater lakes and reservoirs and the societal benefits of controlling HABs by establishing a collaboration between the US Army Corps of Engineers and a Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Units partner.

This project will:

  1. Capture economic damages avoided by controlling HABs freshwater inland lakes and reservoirs and surrounding area.
  2. Describe quantitative and/or qualitatively the benefits of treating/controlling HABs to ecosystems experiencing HAB events through Ecosystem Goods and Services framework.
  3. Quantify the return on investment of scalable technologies for detecting preventing, or management of HABs.

High Operational Temperature Sensors

The Microsystems Technology Office seeks innovative proposals towards the development of sensor microelectronics consisting of transducers, signal-conditioning microelectronics, and integration that operate at extreme temperatures. Kidney Cancer Research

The Department of Defense is accepting applications for kidney research. Applicants must address at least one of the following Focus Areas:

  • Conduct basic biology research to better understand etiology and cancer progression, metastatic disease, refractory disease and therapeutic resistance, genetic and environmental risk factors, and the prevention of kidney cancer.
  • Identify and develop new strategies for screening, early-stage detection, and accurate diagnosis and prognosis prediction of kidney cancers.
  • Define the biology of rare kidney cancers and develop treatments to improve outcomes and reduce death.
  • Develop novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of kidney cancer.
  • Identify and implement strategies to improve the quality of life and survivorship for patients.
  • Identify and implement strategies to mitigate health disparities.
  • Increase research capacity through support and development of research conducted by the next generation of kidney cancer researchers, cultivate collaborations in kidney cancer research, or patient care.

There are seven opportunities available:

  1. Academy of Kidney Cancer Investigators Early-Career Scholar Award - This award supports a virtual academy providing intensive mentoring, national networking, collaborations, and a peer group for junior faculty emerging as potential leaders of kidney cancer research. The overarching goal is to advance kidney cancer research through development of highly productive kidney cancer researchers in a collaborative research and career development environment. Two awards are expected. The total funding pool is $2.32 million. Preproposals are due September 15. Applications are due October 6.
  2. Clinical Trial Award - This award supports the rapid implementation of clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the treatment or management of kidney cancer. Clinical trials may be designed to evaluate promising new products, pharmacologic agents, devices, clinical guidance, and/or emerging approaches and technologies. One award is expected. The total funding pool is $2.4 million. Preproposals are due September 15. Applications are due October 6.
  3. Concept Award - This award supports untested and potentially groundbreaking novel concepts in kidney cancer.   4. Idea Development Award - This award supports ideas and high-impact approaches to move toward the goal of eliminating kidney cancer. Preliminary data are required.   5. Nurse-Initiated Research Award - This award supports kidney cancer research conducted by nurses working in clinical practice and/or an academic environment, to advance ideas or clinical care.   6. Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellowship Award - This award supports recent doctoral or medical school graduates in pursuit of kidney cancer research during their postdoctoral and/or clinical fellowship. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Boosting Innovative GEOINT - Research

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Research Directorate is accepting applications for pioneering research in the analysis and real-time, interactive visualization of large, high-resolution 3D data (HR3D) sets and associated registered imagery sources, particularly its representations in the form of point cloud, mesh, or polygonal models. Scientific and Engineering Support for Advanced Electronic Warfare

Transformative Research in the Education Sciences Grant Program

The Institute of Education Sciences seeks to provide national leadership in expanding knowledge and understanding of:

  • education outcomes for all learners from early childhood education through postsecondary and adult education, and

Variable Speed Hydro Generator Emulation Platform

The Department of Energy seeks to simulate conventional pumped hydroelectric facilities as part of hardware in the loop research.

The Subcontractor shall be responsible for providing:

The National Institutes of Health seeks to fund organizations who can help All of Us build its cohort of volunteers who reflect the rich diversity of the United States and are actively engaged as partners. The All of Us Research Program is an effort to gather data from at least 1 million people, with the goal of accelerating health research and medical breakthroughs. Funded organizations will help design and implement strategies to raise awareness of the program through community and health care provider organizations, drive increased enrollment of participants, foster regular communication with participants, and engage the research community to use the data being gathered. Applicants must submit a white paper by August 31. White papers must address one or more of the following Areas of Interest:

  1. Community, Participant and Provider Engagement, Enrollment and Retention;
  2. Engage researchers from diverse backgrounds to utilize the All of Us data resources to advance precision medicine;
  3. Engagement with Tribal Nations, American Indian and Alaska Native populations, and Indigenous Communities; and
  4. Integrate participants and advocates into the oversight of the All of Us Research Program.

Assessment of Potential Substance Abuse Treatment Medications in Nonhuman Primate Models

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is accepting applications to provide technical and scientific expertise to determine the effects of compounds in the following:

  1. drug discrimination test in nonhuman primates when tested alone or in combination with cocaine,
  2. self-administration test in nonhuman primates when tested for ability to reduce cocaine, methamphetamine, or heroin self-administration or to be directly self-administered, and
  3. ability to lessen signs of opioid withdrawal in opioid dependent nonhuman primates.

Leveraging Social Networks to Promote Widespread Individual Behavior Change

The National Institutes of Health is accepting applications for two opportunities focused on how social networks impact health:

Neuropathological Interactions Between COVID-19 and ADRD

The National Institutes of Health is accepting applications that propose studies in animal, cell culture, and/or human tissue models to elucidate the mechanisms by which COVID-19 interacts with and/or modulates ADRD-relevant mechanisms and outcomes.
