DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY Electric Drive Vehicle Battery Recycling and Second Life Applications The National Energy Technology Laboratory seeks to advance research, development, demonstration, and deployment in several areas critical to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Objectives include to reduce the costs associated with transportation, dismantling, and preprocessing of end-of-life electric drive vehicle batteries for recycling, as well as recycling of plastic and polymer electric drive vehicle battery accessory components through research, development, and demonstration. There are two topic areas: - Improving the economics of transportation, dismantling, and preprocessing of electric drive vehicle batteries - to improve the economics of Lithium-Ion EV battery recycling to ensure an economically profitable EV battery recycling ecosystem. Four to nine awards are expected of between $4 to $8 million.
- Recycling of electric drive vehicle battery accessory components - to develop and demonstrate technologies and processes for recycling and disposal of plastics and polymer composites used in casings and enclosures of EV batteries. One to two awards are expected of between $1 to $2 million.
