Electric Drive Vehicle Battery Recycling and Second Life Applications
The National Energy Technology Laboratory seeks to advance research, development, demonstration, and deployment in several areas critical to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Objectives include to reduce the costs associated with transportation, dismantling, and preprocessing of end-of-life electric drive vehicle batteries for recycling, as well as recycling of plastic and polymer electric drive vehicle battery accessory components through research, development, and demonstration.
There are two topic areas:
  1. Improving the economics of transportation, dismantling, and preprocessing of electric drive vehicle batteries - to improve the economics of Lithium-Ion EV battery recycling to ensure an economically profitable EV battery recycling ecosystem. Four to nine awards are expected of between $4 to $8 million.
  2. Recycling of electric drive vehicle battery accessory components - to develop and demonstrate technologies and processes for recycling and disposal of plastics and polymer composites used in casings and enclosures of EV batteries. One to two awards are expected of between $1 to $2 million.

Grid-Enhancing Data Analytics Demonstrations for Operations, Monitoring and Control
The National Energy Technology Laboratory is accepting applications to enhance grid reliability and resilience with demonstrations of sensors and advanced analytics to develop the grid of the future. The program aims to build on current best practices, standards, and frameworks to advance the state of the art in utility data analytics. Technologies should leverage information in the potential for rapid deployment and wide-scale deployment of these new technologies into the power sector.
Projects should support at least one of the following:
  1. Demonstration of applications utilizing existing Advanced Metering Infrastructure data;
  2. Demonstration utilizing high fidelity synchronized measurement for grid stability monitoring and control; and
  3. Demonstration of applications utilizing mixes of different sensors for improving grid resilience, security, and safety leveraging commercial off-the-shelf sensors.
Concept papers are required and are due January 23.
Awards:
4-7 awards are expected of up to $1 million each. 20% cost share for the R&D phase and 50% cost share for the demonstration phase is required.
Eligibility:
Unrestricted. However, applications must include a utility as either the prime recipient or sub-recipient in a team structure.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases seeks to support research related to the bat immune system.
There are two opportunities available:
  1. Support for research projects that will characterize cellular and molecular constituents of the bat immune system and seek to understand protective innate and adaptive immune mechanisms in bats is available through award ID RFA-AI-23-068. Four to five awards are expected of up to $300,000 per year per award for direct costs. Eligibility is unrestricted.
  2. US DOE releases $14.5M funding opportunity for R&D in marine and offshore wind energy
US, Jan 18: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched a $14.5M funding opportunity, aiming to address challenges in marine and ocean renewable energy industries and to encourage innovation. DOE’s Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) and Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) released the opportunity on January 16, 2024, to support foundational research at domestic higher education institutions, including those serving minorities.

US, Jan 22: Administration officials have announced more than $55 million in new federal grants for Defense Department projects aimed at improving energy efficiency and resilience at installations across the globe. The funds will support eight projects at Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Washington headquarters services bases throughout the U.S. and at the U.S. Army Garrison in Wiesbaden, Germany.

USDA Invests Approximately $11.5 Million in Composting and Food Waste Reduction Projects in 23 States
US, Jan 25: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing approximately $11.5 million in 38 cooperative agreements that support innovative, scalable waste management plans to reduce and divert food waste from landfills. The Composting and Food Waste Reduction Cooperative agreements, which are funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, are part of USDA’s broad support for urban agriculture. The program is jointly administered by USDA’s Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). The recommended projects will be implemented between now and 2026.
